"The walk from Tarpoche is through a canyon, along the left bank of the Lha chu river. Bands of Tibetan pilgrims passed us by, some comprising as many as thirty persons. These included children carrying younger siblings on their backs. They walked rapidly, as though the burden they carried had no weight at all. Clearly, the elevation did not create the same level of stress in their systems as it did for us. The pilgrims went about shouting 'tashi dalek' as they went by. Some little children politely stuck their tongues out in greeting, while a few very religious adults prostrated along the entire route without the slightest expression of discomfort."
