Steven M. Barrett

Author Steve Barrett paid his first visit to Disney World in the late 1980s, after attending a medical conference in Orlando. He immediately fell under its spell, visiting it twice yearly with family and friends for the next several years, offering touring advice to the less initiated, and reading almost everything written about the WDW theme parks. When a job in his field opened up not far from WDW in 1998, Barrett, a Texas native, Air Force veteran, and former Oklahoma City professor, relocated to the Orlando area from Houston, Texas.

He began visiting the WDW parks every chance he got to enjoy the attractions, sample the restaurants, escort visiting friends and relatives—and search for hidden Mickeys! His interest in these camouflaged images of Mickey Mouse eventually led him to take pen in hand and write the first of his Hidden Mickeys guidebooks, Hidden Mickeys: A Field Guide to Walt Disney World’s Best Kept Secrets. Now in its seventh edition, it’s a guide in scavenger-hunt format to over 1,250 hidden Mickeys in the WDW Resort.

He went on to write Disneyland’s Hidden Mickeys (now in its fifth edition) and Hidden Mickeys Go To Sea, which covers hidden Mickeys on Disney’s four cruise ships and is now in its third edition. Together, Barrett’s three guides have spread the mania for finding hidden Mickeys far and wide.

Barrett continues to visit WDW almost every week, finding the parks and other attractions every bit as magical as they appeared to him on his first visit over two decades ago.
